Moulded candles

We added drops of essential oils to make scented candles - one cedar, one lavender.

The candles were quick to pour so this method is faster than making dipped candles, but it still begins with the long process of melting the wax, which warms the kitchen and provides a gentle aroma of honey.

Wax building

September 2014

I treated the colony with Apiguard, to kill varroa. This involves placing an eke (spacer) above the brood box to make room for the tray of Apiguard, then I put the crown board and roof on top. When it was time to remove these, I found the bees had filled the eke and some of the roof space with honeycomb.

So I had a first go at melting and filtering beeswax.
