Copper Bee Apiary

A garden apiary in Whittlesford, Cambridge, UK - honey bees and their beekeeper Hilary van der Hoff.

Piping

There’s been too much going on to write much, but here are a couple of videos in a hive where you can hear a new queen piping. I could hear her before I even opened the hive.

The first video is taken looking down on the top bars of the brood box. The queen is piping as the video starts, though it’s a little hard to hear over the pigeon. She pipes again at the end of the video.

In the second video, the camera follows the queen as she strides around on a comb then pauses to pipe.

I wrote about piping before, but it seems the sound recordings on that earlier post don’t work anymore.

I hope to introduce our new season’s queens to you in May, when we hope to have three newly mated laying queens in the apiary.
